Audio tribute to Dubliner's member, the singer Mr. Ronnie Drew.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 10:01:33 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

My father left his  first comment to my blog yesterday.  Well done!!!!!

He had one suggestion.  Leave an audio tribute to Ronnie Drew.  I think it's a great idea so here it is.  Even if your not in to Irish music, you should have a listen.  The pipes are a powerful instrument.  Ok.  I'm bound to say that considering I'd spend every minute of the day on them if I had the option.

Listen to the recording directly via this link.

is a strange name isn't it? It caught my attention though so I gave it a look.  You should too.  It's by a new comer to the Blogging scene by the name of Vicky.  She's new at this game but she's doing well.  Go on over and post a comment to show her that people actually read these things from time to time.

Taming a Cockatiel.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 10:38:44 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Our Cockatiel taming and training is going slower now than before.  On Thursday and Friday we took a few steps backward.  For some reason, it started to get nervous of our hands so we need to go back to basics.  Working on hand taming has therefore been our priority for the past few days.  Saturday, after it ventured out of its cage it got comfortable enough to come back over to me.  First it sat on my foot for about half an hour but climbed up to my leg afterword.  It went from there back to its cage without going near my hands however after the previous day’s nervousness this was a very welcome improvement.  Sunday was another thing completely!  It ran around its cage with excitement when we were in the room, it interacted with us a lot and it even decided to play a little game with me.

It allowed me to pick it up from the floor and sat on my knee for a while.  Then it went back onto my knee onto my left hand.  After a while it climbed up to my left shoulder.  As it climbed up though I moved my right hand up to the top of my left shoulder.  When it got to my hand, I gave it a second then made a swinging motion back to my knee.  This seemed to be a great game as after getting back to my knee; it waited for a minute then climbed up my right hand up to my right shoulder.  Like last time, my left hand was waiting for it.  Again, when it got onto my hand I made a swinging motion back down to my knees.  This messing with my shoulders went on for a while.

Of course, when it had enough, it climbed up to the top of my head and flew back over to its cage.  The sensation of a bird using your hair as a ladder is very weird.  He uses his beak to grab on then his feet to push himself up.

Two days and still counting.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 10:18:30 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

I’d say that the one thing Emma will miss from working with Nikon via Stream is being able to borrow photography equipment.  So far in the past few months she’s borrowed the D3, the R1C1 kit, countless lenses, the SB800 (although she has the SB600) and a few very cool macro lenses.  Couple that with her already nice array of camera technology such as the D 50, the D 200 and a few lenses as well as two external flashes, a tripod and a monopod, at times she goes around like the bag lady, bags resting across both shoulders, stands in each hand and her main camera dangling over her neck.  That’s only when she’s at home!  When she’s doing weddings she’s worse!  Then she’s got spare batteries and more speed lights! Anymore and she’s going to look like a Borg, one of the cybernetic alien things from star trek!

Two days until we’re off for ten days and Emma finishes with Stream!

My server is dead.

Monday, August 18, 2008 1:25:31 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

My server took a turn for the worst on Sunday afternoon around 2PM.

Emma and I tried to revive it but were unsuccessful.

Procedure used was: Remove CMOS battery.  This prooved to do absolutely F all.  Next procedure was to use motherboard jumpers to reset the BIOS configuration to the factory defaults.  This also prooved equally as pointless.

Finally, I plugged the server out, re-enabled the DHCP server on the router and set a static DNS pointer to point to it so the server is currently not needed to facilitate internet access on the network.

It is hoped that a new server can be sourced soon as using GMail to read my mail  from several accounts instead of Outlook via RPC over HTTP is a right pain in the ass.

Quotations are currently welcome.  Price range is aproximitly four to five hundred Euro.  The HP offering for this type of server is eight hundred euro however the specification is frankly: Pants!

Dell seem to have a few nice servers for around this price range however I'm not sold that they'll be the best option yet.

Why not go for something more expensive? I hear you ask? Well, yes, more money means more power however I want to keep running costs to an absolute minimum.  As a result of pressure from people in my office and the feer that I'll lose all the backups that I've made to the server, I've decided to go for a system that supports at least rade 1 at a minimum.  However, if I go for something powerful in the server line it gets more noisy and more expensive to run.  Sure I'd love to go for one of the 900 range like the one sitting behind me waiting for me to install the driver for the second rade controler that I installed this morning but that thing makes the office vibrate when it's running something!"  OK. that might be a bit over the top but you get my meaning!  It's loud! There's also a HP laserjet 5110CN behind me printing out something for the whole morning that's starting to get on my nerves too!

If you have any suggestion how to shut up the printer and oh, of course, what server to get, please let me know.

Monday, August 18, 2008 10:12:23 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Since working in Stream, Emma has worked on the level one support team for Nikon photography, she’s managed and administered the cache back promotion and finally she’s been promoted to level two corporate support handling complex camera issues for Nikon professional customers.

As she puts it herself, “Two years ago I had an interest in photography and I’d just been given a D50.  Now the pro’s who work with this stuff every day are coming to me for help!”  The high standing in which she’s held in Nikon and within Stream is a testament to her ability to attain a high degree of knowledge ability across the entire range of technology she has expertly supported.

Three days and we're both off for a week and a half and Emma leaves Stream!

R I P Mr. Ronnie Drew.

Monday, August 18, 2008 8:19:10 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Ronnie Drew was an infamous musician that made a particularly prominent mark on the Irish music scene.  Both as a solo artist and as part of the Dubliners, he was a respected singer by everyone who had anything to do with Irish music.  Recently, he had fought a tireless battle with cancer that finally ended on Saturday.

I was very fortunate to hear Mr.  Drew at his last public performance a number of months ago in the Helix and even though the cancer was ravaging his body, his determination to continue and his love of the music he performed was easy for everyone to see.

My most heartfelt condolences go to Ronny Drew’s family.

Four days left!   Then not only is Emma leaving Stream but we're both off work for a week and a half!  Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!

I remember when Emma went for her interview.  It was the Monday after the big gig in Drogheda.  She met me in a small restaurant type place in the East point business park and we had some lunch and discussed what I'd been telling her about Stream for the previous week. We went over common interview techniques and questions and I told her about the team and the person who would be interviewing her later that afternoon.  She was nervous but quietly, I think she was confident too.

During the interview, a bloke I worked with, Ray decided to take her mood off the nervousness for a minute by making faces at her through the window in the door.  She came out laughing historically beaming at her success but threatening to kill Ray if he ever did it again.  A few months later actually we laughed about that with her manager over a pint or ..... Two.

The first day Emma started with Stream, she was left sitting with two other new starters in the canteen.  One of these people is Fergus; a guy that I originally thought was as rough as sand paper.  Just goes to show you.  Never judge a book by its cover.  Fergus turned out to be a great friend to Emma and a real source of knowledge that she benefited from for over a year while they worked closely together.  Even now, Fergus and Emma remain great friends and I'm sure it will continue long after she leaves Stream. In saying all that, he backs a really useless football team.  Just goes to show you.  Some people no matter how much you tell them just won't learn.

ON Wednesday the 20th of August 2008 Emma will break from the poisonous clutches of Stream!

Four months ago I finally broke free after four years of service to the same company.  I have to say, that after four months in this job, I couldn't be happier.  I most definitely made the right move.

Five days! That’s 40 working hours!    If you want to get really obsessive over it, it's 2400 minutes!  In seconds that's ................ no.  I'm not going there.

Day two training our cockatiel.

Thursday, August 14, 2008 9:58:13 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Training of our cockatiel now temporarily named “Little dood” is going reasonably well.  We’re getting it into a routine of: Stay in the cage while we’re out of the house but while we’re in the house it’s likely to be let out.  Of course, it must stand on my hand before it’s let out of the cage.  This is actually a concept it’s getting the hang of very quickly. Do something good and you’ll be rewarded, do something bad and you’ll be put back in the cage.  It’s been free for a lot of its twelve week life, only put in the cage at night time so this is something it will understand reasonably quickly.

We’ve mutually decided that for the moment, I will do the majority of the hand taming and training stuff.  Emma’s a bit on the nervous side still as she’s not had physical contact with a bird since she was three!  It’s very important at an early stage to be confident with them as if your movements aren’t definitive and direct with a purpose then they’ll pick up on your nervousness and think it’s something to be afraid of.  Take for example training them to recognise the up command.  You stretch out your index finger and move it quickly in their line of sight toward their feet.  When you feel their feet, stop and gently say the up command.  To illustrate to the bird what you mean, press lightly up on their stomach and they’ll instinctively hop up.    However, if you hold your hand or finger in front of them for too long they’ll start to feel uneasy.  Especially when the bird doesn’t yet fully trust that you’re not going to hurt it.

We’ve both done a lot of reading on this subject lately but I have to confess, I’ve had some prior experience.  Many millennia ago, from when I was a very young child right until I was sixteen or seventeen I bred and raced pidgins with my uncle.  Pidgins are much bigger and faster birds so working with them is much more difficult.  In saying that, they don’t bight half as much as cockatiels.  Yesterday that cockatiel got a bit too happy to bight.  I don’t particularly mind.  It can try bight me all it wants.  After it attacked my ear lobe after sitting on my shoulder yesterday nothing can be as uncomfortable as that!

OH. Actually, speaking of it on my shoulder, I think it’s amazing that on the second day well, actually, the first day of having the bird it independently made a decision to make its way from my hand up on to my shoulder.   It stayed up there for quite a while too!  It only bit me once while up there and that was because it got spooked by a loud noise.  I tried moving a bit to see how much it would tolerate at an early stage but it decided to attack my neck so I think I’ll do that in smaller stages in future.  I’m trying not to go too fast with it.  When it shows a sign that it’s comfortable, I move on a bit more.  Tonight, I think I’ll actually do very little with it and let it make its own choice as to what it wants to do.

One thing is certain; it’s certainly getting more relaxed.  It was very vocal last night.  It was squeaking and muttering away to us all night.

Actually, for any blind people who are interested in birds, don’t let the fact that you can’t see it put you off.  The aim is that it will come find you.  Not that you go find it.  If you do need to find it, then keep your hand straight, if possible keep it on the same surface as the bird and when you feel it next to your hand, just lift up.  If it’s a big bird like a pidgin, keep the palm of your hand up so you can lift its feet to its back and use your other hand to cup around its chest so when you pick it up it’s facing towards you.  If you hold a bird toward you it will always be much less active in your hand.  If your finding that it’s not going into its cage but it’s sitting on your finger then put it in with its back toward the cage and it will be much more relaxed.  Often, birds don’t like going into a cage, not because they don’t like captivity, it’s because they don’t recognise that there’s a door way that they can fit through.  If we’re still having a problem putting our cockatiel into its cage in a week or two I’ll put some paper around the bars at the opening.

After being taught how to catch a pidgin in the landing box, get the rubber ring off its leg and quickly put it into the race clock, handling other smaller birds is simple in comparison.  That is, if you don’t mind being crapped on from time to time.

Apartment rental. A contract is a contract!

Thursday, August 14, 2008 9:21:50 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

A businessman meets a beautiful girl and agrees to spend the afternoon with her for $500.  So they do. Before he leaves, he tells her that he does not have any cash with him, but he will have his secretary write a check and mail it to her, calling the payment 'RENT FOR APARTMENT.' On the way to the office he regrets what he has done, realising that the whole event was not worth the price.  So he has his secretary send a check for $250 and enclosed the following typed note:

Dear Madam,

Enclosed you will find a check in the amount of $250 for rent of your apartment.  I am not sending the amount agreed upon, because when I rented the apartment, I was under the impression that;

1) It had never been occupied
2) That there was plenty of heat;
3) That it was small enough to make me feel cosy and at home. However, I found out    that it had been previously occupied, that there wasn't any heat, and that it was entirely too large.

Upon receipt of the note, the girl immediately returned the check for $250 with the following note:

Dear Sir,

First of all, I cannot understand how you expect a beautiful apartment to remain unoccupied indefinitely.  As for the heat, there is plenty of it, if you know how to turn it on.  Regarding the space, the apartment is indeed of regular size, but if you don't have enough furniture to fill it, please don't blame the landlady. Send the rent in full or we will be forced to contact your present landlady.

Installing BRLTTY in OpenSuSE 11.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 3:38:35 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Installing BRLTTY is very easy however you would be forgiven if you believed that you had problems.  If you followed my installing ESpeak guide you'll see that libspeak is installed with ESpeak however BRLTTY doesn't see it.  Even if we didn't install it, unless you want to use ESpeak with BRLTTY, you'll not need it.  So, to install BRLTTY, do the following:

  • Download BRLTTY:
    wget http://www.mielke.cc/brltty/releases/brltty-3.10-1.i386.rpm
  • Install BRLTTY.
    rpm -ivh brltty-3.10-1.i386.rpm --nodeps
  • Run BRLTTY with the command:
    brltty

If you don't put the --nodeps switch in wiht the install command, you'll see the dependency error shown below:

error: Failed dependencies:
libbrlapi.so.0.5 is needed by brltty-3.10-1.i386
libspeechd.so.2 is needed by brltty-3.10-1.i386

Charity begins at home! Your help is needed in these trying times.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 10:55:12 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

The Northside of Dublin was hit badly by the floods over the weekend. Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly muttering ' Whaas da bleeeding Story ?' 'aaaaaawright bud' and 'fuuuucksake'.

The flooding decimated the area causing approximately 30 euro worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from Benidorm and Santa Ponsa were damaged beyond repair. Three historic burnt cars were destroyed. Many locals were woken well before their welfare cheque arrived.

RTE News reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered, still trying to come to terms with the fact that the damage had not been caused by illegal means. One resident : Alexis Crystal Duffy, a 15 year old mother of 5 said 'It was such a F***in shock, me little wan Chardonnay Mercedes cem runnin inta me bedruem cryin, Me youngisst two Tyler Morgan an Megan Brooklyn slept tru ih all. But I was bleeedin shaken watchin F***in Rikki Laaake in da mornin'

Apparently though, looting, muggings and incidental crime did carry on as usual. The Irish Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Strongbow, Dutch Gold, Frozen Pizzas, and John Player Blue to the area to help stricken locals.

Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, which include Welfare Books and Jewellery including thousands of Sovereign Rings, many large Medallions and Hash Leaf Shaped earrings from Elizabeth Duke at Argos also Fine Bone China from Tommy's Wonderland of Value in Northside Shopping Centre

After her husband's check-up, a woman was called into the doctor's office. The doctor told her, "Your husband has a serious disease. There are several things you'll have to do for him, or he will surely die. Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant to him. Make him a nutritious lunch for work, and an especially nice meal for his dinner at night. Don't give him chores, or that will increase his stress. Don't discuss your problems with him either. Try to relax him in the evenings by wearing lingerie and giving him backrubs. Let him play golf every weekend and listen patiently to how his round went. And most importantly, make love to him several times a week and satisfy his every whim. If you do these things for the next ten months to a year, I think he'll pull through." On the way home, the husband asked his wife what the doctor had told her. "You're going to die." she replied.

Yesterday, after planning for about just over a month, we finally recieved our 12 week old Cockatiel.  We had planned on finding one as young as possible however this one has been hand rared from a very young age so because we're hoping to make it as interactive as possible it makes sense to go for one that is use to being handled.  Very soon after entering the sellers living room yesterday it was quite happily sitting on my hand.  Soon after that it crapped on my hand and my suit too but hay, that's all part of the deel I suppose. we haven't named it yet mainly because we're waiting to see what kind of personality it has so we can give it a name that fits it.

I'm sure Emma will have pictures taken very soon but at the moment our priority is getting it use to it's new home.  It's going to take a while before it trusts us but Emma's been doing a hell of a lot of research into taiming and training these birds so I have a feeling it's not going to take much time at all.

So, for the next while, you'll probably be reading the same old rubbish about technology, the dog, work, random personal stuff with the new topic of the bird thrown in as well.  Hay, on the up side, people have been complaining that my posts lately have been too technical.

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 8:26:40 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

A Highway Patrolman pulls a guy over for speeding in Houston and has the following exchange:

Officer: May I see your driver's license?

Driver: I don't have one. I had it suspended when I got my 5th DWI.

Officer: May I see the proof of insurance for this vehicle?

Driver: It's not my car. I stole it.

Officer: The car is stolen?

Driver: That's right. But come to think of it, I think I saw it in the glove box when I was putting my gun in there.

Officer: There's a gun in the glove box?

Driver: Yes sir. That's where I put it after I shot and killed the woman who owns this car and stuffed her in the trunk.

Officer: There's a BODY in the TRUNK?!?!?

Driver: Yes, sir. Hearing this, the Officer immediately called his captain. The car was quickly surrounded by police, and the captain approached the driver to handle
the tense situation:

Captain: Sir, can I see your license?

Driver: Sure. Here it is. It was valid.

Captain: whose car is this?

Driver: It's mine, Officer. Here's the insurance information. The driver owned the car.

Captain: Could you slowly open your glove box so I can see if there's a gun in it?

Driver: Yes, sir, but there's no gun in it. Sure enough, there was nothing in the glove box.

Captain: Would you mind opening your trunk? I was told you said there's a body in it.

Driver: No problem. Trunk is opened; no body.

Captain: I don't understand it. The Officer who stopped you said you told him you didn't have a license, stole the car, had a gun in the glove box, and that there was a dead body in the trunk.

Driver: Yeah, I'll bet the lying s.o.b. Told you I was speeding, too.

What else would you like to hear about?

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 8:23:23 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Good morning all,  I've taken a small break from using the Mac this morning as I wanted to get sum work done on my Linux" machine.  When I say work though, I don't mean that the installation of Fedora needs anything done to it, I just needed to write up a few things while on the train this morning and I rather use OpenOffice than Nisus writer pro on OSX 10.I have to admit though, this is possibly more because I'm familiar with how OpenOffice does things now and I'm still getting use to all the commands on the very different Mac keyboard.  However, I have to say, I much prefer the Mac keyboard to the one on this laptop.

As you'll see from my previous post from last night, I've submitted the second walk through for OpenSuSE 11.  I was shocked at the responses that I got from the first walk through.  I originally thought that the most I could hope for was to raise awareness of the new accessibility features within OpenSuSE 11 however from what I'm seeing in my in box most days; people are really interested in using this distribution.  Mainly because of its links to SLED and SLES, the more professional and enterprise targeted products.  I only hope now that people who use it will go on over to the OpenSuSE Bugzilla site and submit as many bugs that they find as possible so that OpenSuSE 11.3 builds upon the success of version 11.

Sticking with the topic of Audio walk throughs and even text based instructions, what would you like to see next?  Of course, I'll continue to try to record a walk through when a new version of Ubuntu or OpenSuSE is released to ensure that new users have a source to follow if they require it but I'd also like to challenge myself as well.  Let me know what you’re finding hard to configure or get working and I'll see what I can do.  I'm not promising that I'll have any more success than you've had but as they say, two heads are better than one.

Second OpenSuSE 11 audio walkthrough now available. Update OpenSuSE and install ESpeak.

Monday, August 11, 2008 10:32:06 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

With the aim of illustrating that the OpenSuSE Linux" distribution is becoming a more viable option for visually impaired computer users with each new release, I have released a second audio walk through that will guide listeners through updating the operating system, navigating through the Orca preferences dialogue, using firefox 3 and of course, installing the ESpeak synthesizer.

This walk through will get you up and running with OpenSuSE with a synthesizer that is easy to understand and responds to your commands quickly.

Get the second OpenSuSE 11 walkthrough here.

If you have yet to listen to the first walk through guiding users through the installation of OpenSuSE, get it here.

Risk assessment.

Monday, August 11, 2008 11:19:44 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

This morning, after working here for almost 5 months now, I had to pass a risk assessment. HR organized a woman to come over and look at my work environment, the other parts of the buildings that I need to visit regularly and the type of work I do.

Fair play to them really, they have approached things much better than the last company I worked with.  Their very careful though.  That can be a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it.

The funny thing is, compared to working with my father years and years ago in his factory; this place is like walking in a field with absolutely no obstructions for miles! Picture a furniture manufacturer’s factory with a huge conveyer system spanning the entire lower level, a spraying booth with a water filtration system, a heating tunnel, a section with work benches placed at random places at even more random angles, large cutting and drilling machines, and that's only on the bottom floor!  Upstairs there was a long CNC machine, a few saws, a massive flat sander and other machines that I can’t even think of at the moment.  Now picture me, a blind person walking around there often with a locker, head or foot board from a bed, a few side rails again, from a bed or a frame from a chest of drawers in my hands.  Obviously, when both hands are busy carrying something you can’t use a cane, and if something had just been sprayed, if you knock it, you may as well just die because the person who's sprayed it is probably bound to kill you sooner or later.

Come to think of it, people often wonder why my mobility is so good.  It's because I wasn't given a choice! Walking around that place when there were 23 people working there with machines working in every direction, you had to build up a very clear awareness of what was around you. Actually, don't take it from me!  Hopefully Emma will respond with a comment describing the place.

It's therefore funny that they send someone over to make sure I can get around a building or two with a few boxes from time to time.

Three girls all worked in the same office with the same female boss. Each day, they noticed the boss left work early. One day the girls decided that, when the boss left, they would leave right behind her. After all, she never called or came back to work, so how would she know they went home early? The brunette was thrilled to be home early. She did a little gardening, spent playtime with her son, and went to bed early. The redhead was elated to be able to get in a quick workout at the spa before meeting a dinner date. The blonde was happy to get home early and surprise her husband, but when she got to her bedroom, she heard a muffled noise from inside. Slowly and quietly, she cracked open the door and was mortified to see her husband in bed with her lady boss! Gently, she closed the door and crept out of her house.

The next day, at their coffee break, the brunette and redhead planned to leave early again, and they asked the blonde if she was going to go
with them. "No way," the blonde exclaimed. "I almost got caught yesterday."

looking internally and externally for musical inspiration.

Monday, August 04, 2008 9:38:08 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)

Looking for a style to be inspired by is really difficult!  But... I found two really young musicians on YouTube last week that definitely helped me get out of a bit of a rut that I'd been in musically for the last while.  I've been spending a lot of energy on the Bodhran over the last month or two because I'm finding it hard to deviate from the norm.

Unfortunately, a lot of this post isn't going to make sense to you if you’re not into drumming or music.

When playing something like a 4 4 beat, there's only so much you can do.  You can vary the dominant beat, you can double treble or quadruple the beat so for every one beat you have two, four 6 or eight, you can even play a 3 4 beat over it and make the dominant beat match that of the dominant beat of the 4 4 time.  You can only do that for one bar though or you'll distort the timing too much.  If you’re interested in any of that stuff let me know and I'll do a separate audio recording demonstrating them.  Anyway, if you listen to this attached file you'll get a fair idea of what I'm talking about.

I should stress that ordinarily, I never think of music in terms of such structures.  I play by ear and by heart. The brain rarely comes in to it.  I met a percussionist last year while playing in Israel who made me think of bodhran playing in a very structured manor and although I wouldn't ordinarily even think of doing such a thing it really made me expand my range and in my humble opinion gave me a much better outlook to enable me to expand my skill.

You might think that playing a drum is easy.  You only need to play in time with the music but there's much more too it.

Anyway, take a listen to this.  I'd really like to get a drummers perspective.  I'd also love to get really experienced bodhran players ideas as well!

If you’re interested in listening to what's inspired me this week, here are the two links to the YouTube recordings.
